Romanian F-16 pilots intercept Russian drones amid political instability

Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Romania has recorded over 80 airspace incursions, but the military previously exercised restraint. Experts point to the irony of spending half a million euros on missiles to neutralize inexpensive Russian UAVs. Analyst Radu Magdin suggests the persistent, back-to-back incursions are deliberate Russian probes of NATO’s southern flank. In response to the weekend's events, Bucharest has expelled the Russian ambassador, emphasizing that these repeated violations are part of a calculated test of alliance resolve.
