The campaign against port facilities has accelerated sharply. In the first half of this year alone, Russia launched 180 attacks on the region—a figure matching the total for all of 2025. July saw at least 56 additional strikes, resulting in damage to 20 ships and key logistical infrastructure. National Bank of Ukraine Governor Andriy Pyshnyy warned that these disruptions to maritime shipping could shave 0.9 percent off the country’s annual GDP.
While Kyiv attempts to pivot to land borders and Danube river routes, these alternatives remain insufficient to replace the capacity of the Black Sea ports. The tactical shift relies heavily on the Banderol missile, a weapon system unveiled last year that is now seeing widespread deployment. Open-source analysts suggest the system’s effectiveness against port defenses may present a long-term strategic challenge that extends beyond the current theater of operations, potentially impacting regional security calculations for NATO.
