Trump Executive Order Targets State AI Regulations

Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at dismantling state-level artificial intelligence regulations, a move critics characterize as a payoff to tech donors. The directive empowers the Justice Department to sue states over AI laws deemed excessive while threatening to withhold federal funding from those that refuse to comply.

Trump Executive Order Targets State AI Regulations

The White House directive mandates the creation of an AI Litigation Task Force specifically designed to challenge regional oversight. This strategy follows a series of failed legislative attempts in Congress to secure a federal moratorium on state-level AI rules. Watchdog groups like Public Citizen argue the move serves corporate interests that have funneled over $1.1 billion into lobbying and campaign contributions, including financing for the president's inaugural committee.

Industry advocates, including the US Chamber of Commerce, framed the order as a victory for small business innovation. However, state leaders are already pushing back. California Governor Gavin Newsom denounced the policy as a calculated con, maintaining that the state will continue to enforce safeguards against risks like algorithmic manipulation, data center resource consumption, and deepfake content. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) vowed to challenge the administration's reach, labeling the order an indefensible power grab that prioritizes billionaire benefactors over public safety and worker protections.
