Marquez began his deliberate journey at 38, shortly after completing his Ph.D. at Indiana University. Rather than focusing on a distant retirement date, he adopted a framework popularized by the Money Flamingo blog, which divides wealth accumulation into sequential stages. This approach allows him to track progress through concrete markers, starting with debt elimination and moving toward "F-you money"—a cushion of roughly one year’s living expenses—and eventually reaching Coast FI, where compounding growth takes over the heavy lifting.
By June 2024, Marquez reached the "Lean FI" stage. With a portfolio nearing $400,000, he can now cover essential costs like housing and food through investments, provided he maintains his modest lifestyle. His position in China, which includes subsidized campus housing, allows him to live comfortably while saving 70% of his income. He maintains that reaching this level of security on a teacher's salary defied his earlier assumptions about needing vast wealth to solve financial problems. While the final stages of his roadmap include full financial independence and "Fat FI," Marquez remains content with his current progress, noting that his low cost of living makes his existing portfolio feel increasingly abundant.
