Infantino finds refuge in Africa amid UEFA power struggle

The proposed privatization of tournament stakes through a new entity, 'Forward Enterprise,' triggered a sharp rebuke from the European, Asian, and North American confederations. In a joint open letter signed on August 10, these organizations accused the FIFA president of deception and a fundamental breach of trust. UEFA has maintained its threat to boycott future competitions, with rebel federations already exploring the creation of rival tournaments.

Despite the pressure, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has provided a critical firewall for the embattled executive. CAF president Patrice Motsepe recently reaffirmed his backing, citing the president's loyalty to the region. This support is mirrored on the FIFA Council, where Egypt, Morocco, Niger, Mauritania, and Comoros have aligned themselves with him. Infantino has largely operated from FIFA’s regional headquarters in Rabat since July, deepening his ties to the continent as the traditional European dominance in global football governance continues to erode.
