Biden Faces Backlash Over Doubts on Gaza Death Toll

President Joe Biden ignited a firestorm of criticism Wednesday by stating he has no confidence in Palestinian casualty figures from Gaza, dismissing data that is widely utilized by United Nations agencies, human rights organizations, and international media outlets to track the escalating humanitarian catastrophe.

Biden Faces Backlash Over Doubts on Gaza Death Toll

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) led the condemnation, labeling the president's remarks as dehumanizing and demanding an apology. Executive director Nihad Awad challenged the administration to view the visual evidence of leveled city blocks and mangled remains emerging from the territory daily. Critics argue that by questioning the Palestinian Health Ministry’s reporting, the White House is effectively engaging in a form of denialism regarding the scale of civilian suffering.

Experts and observers note that the figures in question have historically been considered reliable. Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, emphasized that previous independent verifications have shown no major discrepancies with the ministry's reporting. Despite this, the administration remains skeptical, even as the death toll surpasses 6,850, including nearly 3,000 children, according to health officials. The controversy deepens as Israel continues to restrict foreign media access to the strip, leaving the ministry’s counts as one of the few available windows into the realities on the ground.
