Zena Stenvik, superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools, condemned the agency's tactics during a Wednesday press conference. She detailed how ICE agents have been circling school buses and monitoring parking lots, creating an environment of terror for students and families. According to Stenvik, the 5-year-old, Liam Ramos, was taken alongside his father despite the family maintaining an active asylum case with no pending deportation orders.
Stenvik further described the abduction of a 10-year-old girl, who was intercepted by agents while being transported to school, and a 17-year-old student apprehended alone by masked personnel. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan characterized the targeting of minors as being beyond the pale, while U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar labeled the actions as absolutely vile. The detainees remain held in Texas detention centers, facilities that have faced persistent scrutiny regarding their living conditions.
