Jury Finds Meta and Google Negligent in Landmark Youth Addiction Trial

A Los Angeles jury has held Meta and Google liable for the addictive design of their platforms, ordering the tech giants to pay $3 million in damages to a young woman who suffered from severe mental health issues after using Instagram and YouTube since early childhood.

Jury Finds Meta and Google Negligent in Landmark Youth Addiction Trial

The verdict, delivered after 40 hours of deliberation, marks a significant legal setback for Silicon Valley. Jurors found the companies acted with malice and fraud, concluding that features like infinite scrolling and algorithmic recommendations were intentionally designed to foster dependency. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, is responsible for 70% of the damages, with Google’s YouTube covering the remainder. Additional punitive fines are expected to follow.

Legal counsel for the plaintiff, identified as 20-year-old Kaley G.M., successfully introduced internal company communications to demonstrate that executives were aware of the risks their products posed to minors. One memo from YouTube noted the necessity of capturing users while they are still "tweens," while an Instagram internal document candidly compared platform engagement to a "reward deficit disorder." The outcome serves as a bellwether for nearly 2,500 similar cases currently consolidated in Southern California.

This decision arrived just one day after a New Mexico jury imposed a $375 million penalty on Meta for misleading users regarding child safety. Advocacy groups, including the Tech Oversight Project, have characterized these twin rulings as an "earthquake" for Big Tech, signaling that the industry's long-standing reliance on growth-at-all-costs business models is facing unprecedented judicial scrutiny. Despite the ruling, Meta maintains that its platforms provide value, and the company is currently evaluating its options for appeal.
