Global Coral Reefs Face Terminal Recovery Crisis

The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network analyzed 21 million observations across 124 countries to map the degradation of ocean life. Since the 1980s, the surface area covered by hard coral has plummeted by 9.5 percent. While coverage hovered above 30 percent for decades, it cratered to 25.8 percent by 2024. Researchers point to climate-driven heat stress as the primary engine behind this decline.

Excessive warmth forces corals to expel the algae living within their tissues, a process known as bleaching. When sea temperatures remain elevated, the corals cannot reabsorb these essential organisms and ultimately perish. This cycle has repeated four times since 1998, with the gaps between lethal events shrinking so significantly that natural regeneration is no longer keeping pace with the destruction.
