Jewish Artists Defend Mark Ruffalo Against Paramount Smear Claims

A coalition of over 170 Jewish figures, including Joel Coen and Tony Kushner, has rallied behind actor Mark Ruffalo after Paramount executives accused him of antisemitism. The group argues that the studio is weaponizing such charges to deflect scrutiny from its corporate interests and ties to the Israeli government.

The controversy centers on Ruffalo’s public critique of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, father of Paramount CEO David Ellison. Ruffalo had highlighted Oracle’s role in providing technology to the Israeli military amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The actor warned that these ties could become deeply entrenched if the proposed $110 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery proceeds, effectively fusing media power with tech-driven surveillance.

In an open letter released Tuesday, the signatories denounced the accusations against Ruffalo as a calculated campaign to silence dissent. They maintained that criticizing the influence of corporations or their support for specific state actions is not antisemitic. Instead, the group described the merger as a project of tech-driven domination, accusing the Ellisons of attempting to consolidate control over public information while ignoring the human cost of their business partnerships.
