US tech giants spark alarm over euro bond market instability

A massive surge in AI-driven borrowing by American tech titans threatens to destabilize the euro zone bond market. As Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft scramble to fund a projected $1 trillion in infrastructure, their aggressive debt issuance risks crowding out traditional borrowers and inflating financing costs for European governments.

These hyperscalers currently hold roughly €40 billion in euro-denominated bonds, representing nearly 10% of gross new issuance this year alone. While that footprint remains modest compared to total market volume, the sheer pace of their expansion is testing investor appetite. A recent European Central Bank blog post warns that this influx of debt could trigger a spillover effect, forcing sovereign and supranational issuers to pay higher premiums to attract capital.

The structural shift is further complicated by passive investment strategies. As index-tracking funds automatically increase their exposure to tech debt, competing corporate bonds face mounting pressure, effectively tightening liquidity for other sectors. Furthermore, analysts are questioning the reliability of current credit ratings. The prevailing valuations rely on aggressive revenue growth projections that may falter if AI investments fail to deliver expected returns, leaving the market exposed to a significant mispricing of credit risk.
