EU Drafts Diversification Mandates to Counter Chinese Market Dominance

European trade officials are finalizing a new instrument requiring companies in critical sectors to expand their supplier networks, aiming to dismantle the bloc’s growing reliance on Chinese imports. Ditte Juul Jørgensen, the Commission’s director-general for trade, confirmed the move during a Wednesday hearing before the European Parliament’s international trade committee.

The proposed diversification mandate represents the latest in a series of defensive trade measures designed to curb Beijing’s industrial influence. Beyond supplier requirements, the Commission is actively developing an Industrial Accelerator Act, which would restrict Chinese products from public procurement contracts while placing stricter controls on the acquisition of European firms.

Jørgensen characterized the current trade deficit with China as an unsustainable challenge, pointing to deliberate domestic policies in Beijing that foster industrial oversupply. As the bloc moves to assert more control over its supply chains, diplomatic efforts are intensifying. Denis Redonnet is currently engaged in high-level negotiations in Beijing, with Jørgensen scheduled to follow later this month to confront what she described as significant and mounting risks to European economic security.
