Brent Crude Tops $109 as Saudi Pipeline Strike Deepens Energy Crisis

Brent crude surged past $109 per barrel on Monday following confirmation that a drone strike has crippled Saudi Arabia’s critical East-West Pipeline. With satellite imagery revealing extensive fire damage to a key pumping facility, the infrastructure is expected to remain offline for up to five weeks, threatening global supply chains.

Brent Crude Tops $109 as Saudi Pipeline Strike Deepens Energy Crisis

The shutdown of the East-West Pipeline leaves Saudi Arabia with limited options for diverting oil exports to the Red Sea, particularly while the Strait of Hormuz remains largely inaccessible. Regional officials cited by the Associated Press indicate that repairs to the facility, which the Saudi government attributes to Iran-backed militias in Iraq, will take significant time. Analysts warn that if the pipeline is not restored quickly, the market could face a loss of up to 4% of global supply.

The disruption arrives at a volatile moment for energy markets already strained by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the hostilities between the United States and Iran. Compounding the situation, Houthi forces recently seized the Yemeni port of Mocha, further complicating transit through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Even a rapid repair of the pipeline is unlikely to provide immediate relief to consumers, as fuel costs continue to climb. According to the American Automobile Association, average U.S. gasoline prices have reached $4.32 per gallon, while diesel has hit a record $6.23 per gallon.
