Elon Musk swaps luxury for a trailer to oversee Tennessee AI project

Living in an Airstream trailer near a Memphis data center, Elon Musk claims he is prioritizing proximity to the buildout of xAI’s new infrastructure. The world's wealthiest individual, currently overseeing the rapid installation of GPU capacity, describes his compact, utilitarian quarters as a personal palace while working around the clock.

Musk’s decision to sleep mere steps from the servers in Tennessee mirrors his well-documented history of prioritizing workplace presence over comfort. During a recent appearance on the "All-In" podcast, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell confirmed the billionaire’s hands-on approach, noting that he consistently chooses to stay on-site rather than commute. The choice of an Airstream—a brand with deep ties to NASA’s history—aligns with the aesthetic of his aerospace ventures.

This ascetic approach to housing is a recurring theme for the entrepreneur. Following his 2022 acquisition of X, he famously slept at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. Previously, he resided in a modest $50,000 rental property near the SpaceX Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. While he also maintains a prefab Boxabl unit in the region, he characterizes it primarily as a guest space rather than a primary home.

Beyond his living arrangements, Musk addressed ongoing speculation regarding a potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX. While he stopped short of confirming such a consolidation, he emphasized the deep level of technical collaboration already occurring between the two entities. As the pressure to scale artificial intelligence infrastructure intensifies, Musk remains committed to his reputation for minimal sleep and near-constant oversight of his firms' physical operations.
