GOP Crypto Legislation Faces Scrutiny Over Potential Trump Profit

A new watchdog analysis reveals that a trio of cryptocurrency bills currently moving through Congress could provide significant financial windfalls for Donald Trump and his family. Critics argue the industry-backed package is designed to bolster the president’s business empire while shielding his digital assets from federal oversight.

GOP Crypto Legislation Faces Scrutiny Over Potential Trump Profit

The legislative push, dubbed 'Crypto Week' by House leadership, includes the GENIUS Act for stablecoins and the CLARITY Act for digital asset markets. According to the analysis by Accountable.US, these measures would significantly weaken the Securities and Exchange Commission’s regulatory reach, effectively creating a safer harbor for Trump’s personal crypto ventures, including World Liberty Financial and various meme coins. Executive director Tony Carrk warned that the bills provide a government imprimatur for industry fraud while leaving retail investors exposed.

Regulatory Shifts and Conflicts of Interest

The proposed framework would shift primary oversight to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a move analysts fear would leave decentralized finance platforms largely unmonitored. This shift coincides with disclosures that Trump Media & Technology Group and other family-linked entities have moved aggressively into Bitcoin and related assets. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has been a vocal critic, describing the GENIUS Act as a 'superhighway' for corruption. Beyond the president, a Washington Post analysis found that nearly 70 officials in the current administration hold significant stakes in blockchain or digital-asset firms, complicating the legislative landscape. While House Speaker Mike Johnson struggles to navigate internal GOP resistance and defense funding priorities, the debate remains polarized, with some Democrats breaking ranks to support the bills despite warnings of long-term financial instability.
