Vance Targets 700,000 for Removal from Affordable Care Act Coverage

The Trump administration is moving to strip more than 700,000 Americans of their Affordable Care Act coverage, citing a new initiative to combat program fraud. Critics and healthcare advocates immediately denounced the move, labeling the effort a political smokescreen intended to reduce enrollment rather than ensure program integrity.

Vance Targets 700,000 for Removal from Affordable Care Act Coverage

Vice President JD Vance announced the purge during a Tuesday press conference alongside Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz. The administration claims its "Task Force to Eliminate Fraud" will rely on artificial intelligence to identify ineligible enrollees. Vance insisted the government is operating under an extraordinary burden of proof to protect eligible participants, though he noted that the initial 750,000 removals are likely only the beginning of a larger review process.

Advocacy groups were quick to reject the administration's framing. Brad Woodhouse, president of Protect Our Care, characterized the task force as a calculated distraction. He argued that the policy creates unnecessary administrative hurdles and confusion, further destabilizing a system already strained by rising premiums and previous budget cuts. Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee echoed this sentiment, asserting that the removal of coverage is a core component of the current administration’s healthcare strategy.

This push follows significant declines in ACA and Medicaid enrollment during President Trump's second term, a trend exacerbated by a budget law that reduced Medicaid funding by $800 billion. While the administration recently announced $500 rebate checks for some enrollees, critics maintain that such payments are insufficient to offset the broader impact of premium hikes and the loss of federal subsidies.
