Trump Administration Cuts Public Consultation on Triumphal Arch

The Trump administration has abruptly terminated expert and public consultation regarding a proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., arguing that addressing widespread opposition would force a departure from the president’s core vision for the monument.

Travis Voyles, vice chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, informed stakeholders that federal reviews required under the National Historic Preservation Act are being shuttered. The decision follows acknowledgment from the National Park Service that the project would inflict significant adverse effects on historic sites, including the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Despite over 107,000 public comments, the administration opted to bypass further debate, claiming that any meaningful mitigation would fundamentally alter the project’s scope.

The Cultural Landscape Foundation, led by former National Park Service official Charles Birnbaum, condemned the move as a dismissal of public input as "meaningless." While Voyles will submit recommendations to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum by October 7, these are not legally binding. The $100 million project, which lacks congressional authorization, faces ongoing litigation and recent attempts by the president to rebrand the structure as a military complex to justify its taxpayer funding.
