EPP Pushes for Asylum Opt-outs as EU Commission Stays Vague

His reticence reflects a broader tension between the commission’s stated commitment to human rights and the political pressure from its own conservative base. Michael O’Flaherty, human rights commissioner at the Council of Europe, warned that these measures threaten to dismantle decades of established legal protections. EU interior ministers are set to debate the policy in Luxembourg this week before it moves to the October 15 summit.
