Rachida Dati’s history of denial faces trial scrutiny

A decade after dismissing allegations of illicit lobbying as racist attacks and threatening legal action against journalists, former French minister Rachida Dati now faces a high-stakes trial. Currently wearing a police ankle-bracelet, the Paris mayor is being prosecuted over financial ties to the energy giant now known as Engie.

Rachida Dati’s history of denial faces trial scrutiny

The investigation centers on payments Dati allegedly received from GDF Suez during her tenure as a member of the European Parliament. These claims, which she vehemently rejected in 2014 and 2015, have moved from the periphery of parliamentary ethics debates to the heart of a criminal case. During that period, Dati targeted both the press and political critics, including German Green MEP Gerald Häfner, who led the parliament’s advisory committee on the Code of Conduct.

Her office consistently characterized inquiries into her outside income as defamatory. In a 2015 communication, her representatives warned they would not hesitate to sue any media outlet reporting on her financial arrangements with the energy firm. Beyond the Engie case, Dati remains under scrutiny for separate allegations involving the car manufacturer Nissan-Renault. Facing a potential four-year prison sentence, the former justice minister’s legal battle marks a sharp reversal from her years of aggressive public denials.
