Trump Administration Scales Back Fuel Efficiency Standards

The Trump administration faces sharp backlash from climate advocates following a proposal to weaken fuel efficiency standards for new vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration aims to reduce the required average from 50.4 miles per gallon to 34.5 miles per gallon by 2031, sparking concerns over long-term consumer costs.

NHTSA officials suggest the rollback could save consumers roughly $900 in upfront vehicle costs. However, critics argue this immediate relief masks a looming spike in gasoline consumption that will ultimately leave drivers paying more at the pump. While major automakers welcome the increased flexibility, environmental groups view the policy as a regressive step that prioritizes short-term industry gains over climate stability.

Kathy Harris of the Natural Resources Defense Council warned that the move serves the oil industry at the expense of household budgets. Similarly, Dan Becker of the Center for Biological Diversity characterized the policy as self-destructive, arguing it hampers American competitiveness in the global green technology race. Beyond transportation, the administration has also begun dismantling a Department of Energy program designed to certify zero-emissions buildings. Advocates like the Sierra Club’s Amneh Minkara contend that eliminating these voluntary standards removes a critical tool for reducing energy waste and providing transparency to consumers.
