The conference, hosted by EU DisinfoLab, aimed to transition from theoretical analysis to practical deterrence against foreign interference. However, the inclusion of a session titled “USA as a FIMI threat: acknowledge, adapt, push back” transformed the event into a flashpoint for regional diplomacy. The program challenged participants to consider how European institutions might build resilience in an environment where Washington is no longer viewed as an unquestioned ally.
Following direct contact from the US State Department, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Global Affairs Canada withdrew their sponsorship. While the American diplomatic effort successfully pressured several partners to pull their support, France opted to maintain its commitment to the event. The fallout highlights the sensitivity surrounding the definition of information manipulation when the source of that interference is a primary geopolitical partner rather than a traditional adversary.
