Former FTX Staffers Denounce Netflix Dramatization of Exchange Collapse

“It made me physically throw up,” Constance Wang, the former chief operating officer of FTX, wrote after viewing the trailer for The Altruists. The eight-episode Netflix series, premiering November 19, aims to dramatize the rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency empire, but insiders claim the production trades reality for tired tropes.

Wang, who served as a key executive until the company's final days in the Bahamas, rejected the show's depiction of the office as a non-stop party hub. Instead, she described a grueling environment where a core team of fewer than 200 employees worked 16- to 18-hour days. She specifically challenged the portrayal of Caroline Ellison, the former head of Alameda Research, describing her as quiet and introspective rather than the aggressive character depicted in the trailer.

Andrew Croghan, the former head of business development at FTX, echoed these concerns on social media. He argued that the series reduces a complex financial tragedy into superficial romantic drama. The show is the latest in a string of Silicon Valley-themed productions, arriving alongside recent documentaries on Facebook and Elon Musk, and a forthcoming film about OpenAI. For those who lived through the collapse, however, the dramatization feels less like a documentary and more like a distortion of their professional experience.
