Trump Announces 10-Day Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Amid Internal Friction

Donald Trump claimed on Thursday that the governments of Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire effective immediately, marking a potential shift in regional hostilities. The president intends to host Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Joseph Aoun at the White House to formalize a longer-term truce.

The announcement faces immediate skepticism due to the exclusion of Hezbollah from the negotiations. Because the militant group remains the primary combatant, critics argue the agreement lacks practical utility. Nicholas Grossman, an international relations professor at the University of Illinois, noted the absurdity of the deal, pointing out that Lebanon is not a formal combatant and possesses no fire for its government to cease.

Domestic fallout in Israel suggests the announcement caught officials off guard. According to i24News diplomatic correspondent Amichai Stein, members of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet expressed outrage, as the Prime Minister allegedly signaled consent to the ceasefire before securing formal approval from the Security Cabinet. The move follows weeks of intense bombing and ground incursions in Lebanon that have displaced over 1 million people and caused significant casualties. Iran has reportedly demanded such a ceasefire as a prerequisite for broader negotiations regarding the conflict with the United States.
