The minister’s comments follow the European Central Bank’s recent approval of UniCredit’s move to acquire a significant stake in Germany’s Commerzbank. While Giorgetti described the transaction as a major project requiring careful execution, he emphasized that Rome favors a strategy where Italian institutions expand their footprint abroad. Government officials have indicated support for UniCredit’s ambition to build a larger European banking group, provided the Milan-based lender maintains its headquarters on Italian soil.
This push for expansion coincides with complex domestic maneuvering. France’s Credit Agricole recently declined to tender its 29.3% stake in Banco BPM into a takeover offer from Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, instead signaling interest in merging its own Italian operations with Banco BPM. While Italy maintains "golden powers" to intervene in strategic sectors, the government has officially committed to neutrality regarding current market activity. Beyond consolidation, Giorgetti noted that the government intends to solicit financial contributions from banks and insurers to help fund the upcoming national budget.
