Trump’s Women’s Health Order Draws Accusations of Hypocrisy

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday establishing a new Women's Health Division at the National Institutes of Health, but critics immediately labeled the move a cynical attempt to reshape his image. Advocates argue the initiative lacks funding and ignores the administration's own record of gutting medical research and reproductive care.

Trump’s Women’s Health Order Draws Accusations of Hypocrisy

The initiative, championed by First Lady Melania Trump, creates a White House task force to address conditions like heart disease and endometriosis. Trump appointed Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the effort, claiming it would mobilize the federal government to close health disparities. However, the order provides no new financial backing and explicitly revokes two Biden-era directives that had previously secured nearly $1 billion for women’s health research.

Observers point to a 31% decline in NIH research projects mentioning women during 2025 as evidence of the administration's true priorities. Dorianne Mason of the National Women's Law Center described the order as a performative gesture designed to distract from policies that have slashed Medicaid funding and curtailed abortion access. With midterm elections approaching, the administration faces significant headwinds; a recent Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll shows only 30% of women approve of the president’s performance.
