Trump Pushes to Rename New Mexico, Drawing Fire Amid Economic Crisis

President Donald Trump’s latest proposal to rename New Mexico as “New America” has ignited sharp backlash from critics who argue the move serves as a bizarre distraction from the nation’s mounting economic struggles and an ongoing war, rather than addressing the affordability crisis facing everyday Americans.

Trump Pushes to Rename New Mexico, Drawing Fire Amid Economic Crisis

On his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed the rebranding would add value and prestige to the state, baselessly asserting that it would raise home values and incomes while potentially correcting what he termed “crooked elections.” The suggestion follows a pattern of executive rechristening; the president has previously attempted to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, and has suggested designating the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait.”

Public officials and observers have been quick to dismiss the proposal as an absurdity. U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico emphasized that the state’s name reflects centuries of history predating the United States, calling the state’s identity permanent. Meanwhile, former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, currently running for governor, criticized the president for ignoring working-class needs in favor of vanity projects. As inflation and the cost of living continue to pressure households, critics like California State Senator Scott Wiener labeled the renaming effort a disconnected “Mad King” solution to deep-seated structural economic failures.
