Pressure grows on UN food agency over Palantir software partnership

Three thousand European citizens are demanding the World Food Programme terminate its contract with Palantir, citing a moral contradiction in utilizing software linked to military operations while simultaneously feeding over a million people in Gaza who face acute food insecurity and the risk of bombardment.

Pressure grows on UN food agency over Palantir software partnership

The controversy centers on the WFP’s reliance on the US data-analytics firm to manage its vast biometric database, which tracks vulnerable populations globally. Critics argue that by employing technology used by militaries and border police to identify targets, the UN agency is inadvertently supporting a company whose other clients may contribute to the very destruction of the communities the WFP aims to protect. Giulio Carini of the NGO WeMove Europe described the partnership as a profound ethical failure, noting the dissonance between providing humanitarian relief and utilizing tools potentially tied to the violence in Gaza.

Despite the backlash, the WFP defends the July contract extension as a fiscal necessity. The agency claims that Palantir’s data-processing capabilities have optimized resource allocation, yielding 50 million dollars in savings that would have otherwise been lost to administrative inefficiency. This financial defense comes as the organization struggles to maintain food assistance for 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza, with officials repeatedly citing critical funding shortages as a barrier to scaling their operations.
