Arab Voters Face Widespread Intimidation Amid Israeli Election

As polls opened Tuesday, Arab citizens across Israel encountered systematic delays, surveillance, and aggressive provocations at voting stations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s campaign tactics, characterized by opponents as blatant incitement, have fueled a tense atmosphere, with civil rights groups reporting coordinated efforts to suppress minority turnout.

Arab Voters Face Widespread Intimidation Amid Israeli Election

Mansour Abbas, leader of the Ra’am party, denounced Netanyahu’s rhetoric in a video message, accusing the Prime Minister of using fear-mongering to mobilize right-wing supporters. Netanyahu had previously claimed, without evidence, that Arab voters were attempting to steal the election, while his party deployed activists to observe polling centers under the guise of preventing fraud.

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and the legal center Adalah documented widespread obstructions, including unexplained slowdowns, missing Arabic-language ballots, and unauthorized identity checks by police at polling stations. In Bedouin towns like Segev Shalom, voters faced waits of up to five hours, while reports of settler confrontations surfaced in cities including Haifa and Tayibe. Despite these obstacles, early estimates indicate that Arab turnout remains higher than in the 2022 elections, reflecting a determined effort to challenge the current coalition’s hold on the Knesset.
