UnitedHealthcare scales up AI assistant for 21 million members

UnitedHealthcare has expanded access to its generative AI assistant, Avery, to 21 million members across commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid plans. The rollout follows a seven-month pilot program during which the insurer claimed a 90% resolution rate for member inquiries, effectively bypassing the need for human representative intervention in those instances.

The expansion marks a significant push for the insurer, which initially targeted 20.5 million members by year-end. Accessible via the UnitedHealthcare mobile app and myuhc.com, the assistant interprets complex coverage details, including deductibles, out-of-pocket costs, and provider network status. While the company touts high resolution figures, it has not disclosed the specific methodology behind these metrics or the total volume of interactions processed since the March debut.

Beyond direct member support, Avery assists brokers and employers with plan comparisons and enrollment documentation. When the AI fails to resolve a query, it hands off the session to a human advocate, complete with a conversation summary to ensure continuity. Looking ahead, Chief Data and Analytics Officer Craig Kurtzweil indicated the company is developing capabilities for the assistant to independently call providers and schedule appointments, though a firm timeline for this feature remains unconfirmed.

Despite the rapid deployment, the company maintains that Avery provides general information rather than formal benefit determinations or medical advice. The tool operates under UnitedHealth Group’s Responsible AI governance framework, which utilizes an internal review board of clinicians, ethicists, and legal experts to monitor for bias and performance. Nevertheless, the insurer has yet to release independent accuracy assessments or detailed policies regarding how long member conversation data is retained or whether it is utilized for ongoing model training.
