Brazil Unveils Global Roadmap to End Fossil Fuel Era

With global greenhouse gas levels rising and the 1.5°C climate goal slipping out of reach, Brazil has released a comprehensive strategy for transitioning away from fossil fuels and halting deforestation. The move arrives just days before the UN Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Türkiye, shifts the focus toward implementation.

Brazil Unveils Global Roadmap to End Fossil Fuel Era

André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, the diplomat who led COP30, presented the documents as a fulfillment of promises made in Belém. The plan centers on two primary objectives: an orderly transition from fossil fuels and an end to forest degradation by 2030. Central to this strategy is a financial framework titled 'Implementing the Baku to Belém Roadmap to 1.3T,' which calls for scaling climate finance to at least US$1.3 trillion annually by 2035 to support developing nations.

While climate advocates have welcomed the blueprint, many remain critical of its lack of binding timelines. Carolina Pasquali of Greenpeace Brazil noted that while the plan is a significant step, it stops short of setting explicit phaseout targets. Similarly, Romain Ioualalen of Oil Change International warned that without immediate action, the roadmap risks becoming another cycle of empty dialogue. Experts argue that existing extraction projects already threaten to exceed the remaining carbon budget by seven times, leaving little room for delayed implementation.
