Dutch Pension Fund Drops BlackRock Over Climate Concerns

Pensioenfonds Recreatie has severed ties with BlackRock, withdrawing its €450 million equity portfolio from the world’s largest asset manager. The decision, which names Cardano as the fund's new manager, marks a growing trend among European institutional investors distancing themselves from firms criticized for their extensive fossil fuel investments.

Dutch Pension Fund Drops BlackRock Over Climate Concerns

The Dutch pension fund for the recreation sector cited a comprehensive review of asset managers based on cost and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. While board member Xander den Uyl characterized the move as a business decision, he acknowledged that BlackRock’s recent climate-related controversies were a factor in the selection process. The firm has faced mounting scrutiny after withdrawing from the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative and transferring its Climate Action 100+ membership to its international arm.

This withdrawal follows significant divestments by other major Dutch players, including PFZW and PME, which have collectively pulled billions of euros from BlackRock. Campaigners at Fossil Free Netherlands praised the move, arguing that powerful financial institutions will increasingly lose European clients if they retreat from climate commitments. The development has resonated internationally, with activists in the United States pointing to the Dutch shift as a model for New York City’s pension funds, which are currently reviewing their own asset management contracts.
